The joys and non-joys of non-modal GUI operation

Non-modal GUI operation is almost always an improvement for the end user, often a really hairy job for the developer to implement. (If the non-modality wasn’t taken into account from early on…) (click image for animation)

It more or less works, but the code required to achieve this is way more complicated than the previous code that simply popped up the modal dialog
that didn’t allow doing anything else while it was on screen.
